My wife would like me to argue that you’re forgetting Boys on the Side, The Wedding Singer, and Never Been Kissed. For the record. Fantastic newsletter--bravo!
I don't think Boys on the Side is comedic enough or focused enough on the romance to count as a romcom. It's definitely a mom movie, just not a Mom Romcom.
Just an interloper from the Max Read newsletter. Would “The Proposal” make the cut? It’s a bit of 90s and 2000s worlds colliding with Ryan Reynold’s and Sandra Bullock
It came out seven years too late, in 2009, since the '90s ended in 2002. It does share some throw-back sensibilities with '90s romcoms, but it's definitely pretty firmly a 2000s romcom.
I loved being reminded of some of my favorite movies. I'm part of that target audience! It makes sense that I liked Ticket to Paradise and Lost City (need to see Marry Me).
You touched lightly on disguised Rom Coms- how about Pearl Harbor?
I noticed your use of the word "hallmark" - clever!
Pearl Harbor is definitely a mom movie disguised as a dad movie! I wouldn't consider it a romcom though? More of a romantic drama. But then I suppose Good Will Hunting is the same way.

Let the record also show that I was wrong about two of those three, which you DID include, but she continues to make the case for Boys on the Side.

That sounds right for Pearl Harbor! I haven't seen Will Hunting...another one for my watch list!
